Greyhounds

Specialised veterinary care for greyhounds, including diagnostics, injury treatment, rehab plans and routine health support for racing and retired dogs.
Burdekin Vet Services - Greyhound Vet
At Burdekin Vet Services, we have extensive experience working with greyhounds and other racing or performance dogs, providing veterinary care that supports both their health and their athletic demands. Whether your greyhound is actively racing, in training, spelling, or retired from the track, our team understands the unique needs of these high-performance animals.

Greyhounds are incredible athletes, and their veterinary care often requires a specialised approach. We provide comprehensive health checks, tailored to monitor muscle condition, joint function, and overall performance readiness. Early detection of subtle changes is essential in racing dogs, and our vets are skilled in identifying issues before they progress into more serious problems.

Our services include injury diagnostics and treatment, using modern tools such as x-ray and ultrasound to assess musculoskeletal concerns with accuracy. From soft tissue strains and track-related injuries to more complex conditions, we develop targeted treatment plans to support a safe and effective recovery.
We also offer structured rehabilitation plans, designed to restore mobility, rebuild strength, and help greyhounds return to work comfortably and confidently.

Track dogs benefit greatly from preventative care, and we provide routine vaccinations, parasite control, and dentistry to support long-term health. We can also assist with nutritional advice, conditioning guidance, and strategies to help reduce injury risk during training and racing. For retired greyhounds, we offer ongoing general veterinary care to keep them happy and healthy as they transition to companion life.

GAP Retirement Readiness Scheme

For greyhounds transitioning out of racing, we offer dedicated “transition to retirement” care, including participation in the GAP Retirement Readiness Scheme. This service supports greyhounds as they move into companion life and typically includes:

  • Desexing
  • Heartworm testing
  • Hookworm testing
  • Dental scale and polish
  • Vaccinations

These treatments help ensure retired greyhounds are healthy, comfortable and well-prepared for adoption or life as a loved family pet.

Our team works closely with owners, trainers, and handlers to ensure clear communication and tailored support based on the dog’s workload, age, and performance level. Whether your greyhound needs routine care, injury management, or long-term rehabilitation, we’re committed to providing practical, experienced veterinary services for racing dogs across the Burdekin and surrounding regions.
