Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis leads to effective treatment.

Burdekin Vet Services - Diagnostics
Accurate diagnosis leads to effective treatment, which is why our clinic is equipped with modern diagnostic tools to help us investigate injuries, illness and internal health concerns quickly and precisely. From x-rays and ultrasound to in-house blood testing and external laboratory analysis, we provide fast, reliable results so your animal can get the care they need without delay.

Whether we’re assessing a limping working dog, a colicky horse, a sick cat or a high-performance greyhound, our diagnostic capabilities help us understand what’s happening beneath the surface and tailor the most appropriate treatment plan.

X-Ray Imaging

Radiography (x-rays) allows us to examine bones, joints, the chest and abdomen in detail. We use digital x-ray technology for clear, high-quality images and rapid interpretation.

What to expect:
Most pets are admitted for the day when radiographs are required. Because x-rays often involve holding still in precise positions, your animal will usually need sedation or general anaesthesia to ensure we capture the most accurate images possible. Bringing them in unfed on the morning of admission helps us perform this safely.

Once the images are completed, our team will contact you or arrange a time to review the results together. We’ll walk you through the findings and discuss treatment options in a clear, supportive way.

Ultrasound Scanning

Ultrasound is a gentle, non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create real-time pictures of soft tissues and internal organs. It is especially useful for assessing the abdomen, heart, bladder, liver, kidneys and reproductive structures.

What to expect:
As with x-rays, most animals are admitted for the day and may require sedation to help them stay relaxed and still. We shave a small area of fur to ensure good contact with the probe and apply a water-based gel before scanning. The procedure itself is painless, though mild pressure on the abdomen may feel uncomfortable for some pets.

After the scan, we’ll show you the images, explain what we’ve found and talk through the next steps in your animal’s care.

Laboratory Testing

We offer both in-house and external laboratory services to support rapid diagnosis. This includes blood tests, urine analysis, skin scrapings, faecal testing, cytology and more. Fast results help us identify infection, organ dysfunction, hormonal changes and other internal issues early, often before outward symptoms appear.

Ophthalmic Diagnostics (Eye Pressure Testing)

Our clinic is equipped with a tonometer, allowing us to accurately measure the pressure inside your pet’s eyes. This quick, non-invasive test is essential for diagnosing conditions such as glaucoma and uveitis, which can cause pain and permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Tonometry allows us to detect abnormalities early and begin treatment promptly, helping preserve your animal’s comfort and long-term eye health.
